Enjoying the game of golf is possible with just a basic set of equipment, including clubs, golf balls and tees, and a golf bag. Although golf balls can be expensive, one to two dozen cheap balls should be sufficient for a good game. Marking each golf ball with a unique indicator prevents balls from being lost when hit onto neighboring fairways, but losing golf balls is still common, especially among those who are just starting out.
When it comes to clubs, most beginners do not need the full 14 that most bags carry. In addition to needing a putter, sand wedge, and pitching wedge, beginners also need a set of irons. Typically, 3-, 5-, 7-, and 9-irons are most common in basic sets, but some beginners include a 2-iron club as well. A basic club set should also have a driver, a 3-wood, and a 5-wood. Keeping clubs in a lightweight bag makes transporting them easier and provides additional storage for golf balls and tees.
