Saturday Night Live Receives 22 Emmy Nominations

The recipient of a PhD in pharmacology from the University of Miami, Craig Gelband is a medical professional who oversees content development for educational materials for the New Jersey-based Medical Education Company. In his free time, Craig Gelband enjoys watching Saturday Night Live (SNL).

Despite being on the air for over four decades, NBC’s SNL recently received its most Emmy nominations ever with a total of 22, tying HBO’s Westworld for the most in 2017. The sketch comedy show’s previous record was 16, which it set in 2011 and equaled last year. In addition to a slew of nominations for costume design, editing, directing, and music, the show earned a nomination for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series alongside Billy on the Street, Drunk History, Portlandia, Tracey Ullman’s Show, and Documentary Now! Cast members Vanessa Bayer, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon also earned Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series nominations, while Alec Baldwin received a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Since its debut, SNL has won 50 Emmy awards, which is more than any other series. It has also been nominated for 231 awards. The 2016-17 season of SNL was its most watched in over two decades, while the season finale averaged 8.3 million viewers, marking its highest total for a finale in six years.
